The film starts at 8pm and we meet in the bar upstairs from 7.30 onwards. It’s Bargain Tuesday and you buy your own tickets either on the night at the cinema or online (booking fee applies).

Daniel Craig stars in a dark and thrilling new adaptation of the phenomenally popular bestseller. Troubled, punky and decidedly unconvential, Lisbeth Salander is a brilliant computer hacker.  She is hired by Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to look into the background of radical investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig). As a result Vanger invites him to his remote island to help solve at 40 year-old mystery involving the disapperance of his beloved niece.  As the plot thickens, Lisbeth finds herself drawn in and eventually teams up with Blomkvist to uncover an astonishing truth.

Please be aware, for anyone who hasn’t read the book, that there will be some shocking scenes in the film. It’s running time is 158 minutes and is a certificate 18.

The next meeting of the Book Group is at 7.30 on Wednesday Jan 11th in the Conservative Club, Uppermill.

This month’s book is The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. A ghost story of extra-ordinary spine-chillingness, it’s the perfect book to read in front of the fire on a miserable winter’s afternoon – but probably best NOT read after dark………………….. Plenty of time to read it before the meeting since it’s only 140 pages long.

The book for next month is The Ice is Singing by Jane Rogers:

This is the story of a woman on the run from her husband, her children, herself. Driving through the snowbound Yorkshire countryside, stopping at anonymous bed and breakfasts, prepared to do anything to duck memory, she begins to write stories. Not about her own life, but about other parents, other children: stories to keep her own life at bay . . .

Felicity Aston is a freelance travel writer and adventurer who has spent the last ten years seeking out irresistible challenges and captivating stories in some of the word’s wildest and most extraordinary places.

Could you ski to the South Pole? That was the challenge that British adventurer Felicity Aston put to women from around the Commonwealth. She then set out to create the most international all female expedition ever to ski to the South Pole.

She is currently in the Antarctic undertaking her first solo expedition, which will see her become the first solo woman in the world to ever cross the Antarctic!

To hear about this adventure and her other expeditions why not come along? Everyone welcome.

Beauty & The Beast Ballet at Lowry on Tuesday 24 January 2012 at 7.30 pm – 15 tickets available at £30.50 each (payment deadline 19 December/December meeting)

Nutcracker! follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross’ Orphanage, through a shimmering, ice-skating winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland.

Phantom of the Opera – Palace Theatre on Saturday 21 April 2012 at 2.30 pm – 15 tickets available at £41 each (payment deadline 13 January 2012/January meeting).

Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protegee Christine Daae is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.

The book we’ll be discussing this month is Miss Smilla’s Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg – topical? you bet! but also complicated & exciting (the book, not the snow).

The scarey book for next month is The Woman in Black by Susan Hill -Amazon rating 4½ stars:
